Karen A. Showden of Liverpool passed away at home on Saturday after a year long battle with Leukemia.
Karen was born in Greensburg, PA the daughter of Betty Allwine and the late Charles Richard Allwine. She was a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. After graduation she started her career in education as a high school teacher in Ovid, Central Square and Liverpool NY. She also taught at Onondaga Community College. After her education career, Karen was employed by Lutheran Brotherhood and Thrivent in the insurance and investment business.
Karen was a member of King of Kings Lutheran Church in Liverpool for 40 years and was a past president of the church council.
Over the years Karen applied her organizational and leadership skills on committees, programs, and projects for her church. One of her favorite and very successful activities was the Hearts Desire Auction which she started at King of Kings.
Karen was also involved in community activities such as President of Programs in the Arts for Children (PAC) in the Liverpool school district for several years. She also was president of the Wetzel Road PTO and was a member of the North Area YMCA board.
Karen was an extraordinary collector of friends as can be seen by the hundreds of people she touched throughout her life. She was truly a gift to many.
Karen was predeceased by her father Charles Richard Allwine.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years Ira; daughter Krista (Jason) Allen; grandchildren, Makayla and Damien, mother Betty Allwine, brother, Kenneth (Connie) Allwine.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 21, 2010 at King of Kings Lutheran Church, 8278 Oswego Road, Liverpool.
Calling hours will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday July 20, 2010 at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 Rt. 31 Baldwinsville.

Dear Ira and Family:
Karen was an extraordinary blessing to the LB family, Thrivent family and beyond.
Now, Karen is perfectly healed! Heaven's gain is our loss!

Dear Ira and Krista:
I could not believe my eyes when I saw Karen's obituary. I am so very sorry for your loss. Of course, I have wonderful memories of her at Paul V. Moore. I had her for two different classes. She was a fantastic teacher, but also a great friend to all that knew her. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
