Obituary

A.J. Kalil of Fayetteville, NY passed away surrounded by his family at Upstate University Hospital on September 17, 2022.  His is a big story; too big for the columns allotted here.

A.J. (Assed Joseph) was born on August 11, 1932 into a large and happy Lebanese family and lived his childhood in Liverpool, NY. He was a proud first-generation son.

An impossibly young Marine, A.J. enlisted shortly after the Korean Conflict erupted, tricking his parents into signing permission for their 17-year-old kid. He served honorably for 9 years and remained ever proud of his service to his country. He attended Syracuse University on the G.I. bill crediting the military for allowing him to pursue a college education. He continued his service long after his active duty devoting many enjoyable years to the Marine Corps League.

A.J. enjoyed a successful career in Sales and Marketing but found his true calling and most satisfying career as a "farm hand" at his daughter's family home in Manlius, NY. He and his good buddy Bill Baird of Chittenango, NY found great pleasure in building, repairing and maintaining the farm while drinking gallons of coffee at the property that A.J. referred to as heaven on earth. In fact, A.J. has built countless structures for family and friends throughout Central NY demonstrating his talent and ability to do most anything. They are as numerous as the memories of this great guy.

His charm and his good looks drew you to him but his love and kindness kept you there. He leaves behind his two loving daughters to always reminisce and brag about him; Stephanie Kalil Wolf (William) of Philadelphia, PA; Jamelle Kalil Merriam (Stephen) of Manlius, NY.; two perfect grandchildren, William Merriam and Lena Merriam both of Manlius and his devoted wife of 51 years, Audrey (Barkley) Kalil of Fayetteville.

A.J., you'll be forever remembered, forever missed and forever treasured.  Semper Fi, Marine.
