Barbara L.
Pfeifer
October 9, 1931 – August 5, 2023
Barbara L. Pfeifer, age 91, of Liverpool, NY, died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Saturday, August 5, 2023.
Barbara was born and educated in Michigan. She lived in California and Ohio after high school. Ultimately, she accepted a position as a portrait photographer with Varden Studios in Utica, New York, where she met her beloved husband, George. They were married at St Francis de Sales Church, in 1956 and this September, would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. Barbara and George relocated to Liverpool in 1963, where they raised their eight children. After their children were all in school, Barbara returned to work at Deluxe Check Printers, first as a proofreader and later as a typist, retiring in 1994.
A long-term parishioner of Christ the King Church in Bayberry, Barbara was a Eucharistic minister for many years, and attended services until she was unable.
Barbara was an avid reader who always seemed to have the latest book by her side, especially enjoying science fiction, historical novels, drama and mystery. She enjoyed completing daily crossword puzzles, including the New York Times crossword, which she generally completed in ink, and finished within five minutes or so. Nothing came between her and Jeopardy at 7:30 pm EST.
Barbara was known for her extraordinary cooking and baking skills, including her signature baked macaroni and cheese, fruit pies and pastry wrapped brie. It's not an exaggeration to say she made tens of thousands of gourmet meals for her family. Coworkers and neighbors were never left out, receiving regular deliveries of cookies and pies. Somehow every dish was special and there was no recipe she couldn't decipher.
Barbara was a master crafter, including garment sewing and quilting, knitting, crocheting and many varied types of needlework. She sewed hundreds of garments. Everything was worth a try. Later in life, Barbara took up painting, becoming a member of the Society of Decorative Painters Foundation. She also mastered basketry, selling her exceedingly intricate baskets at her friend Linda's local shop, as well as at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. She shared her gifts with us all and we are lucky to have her creations, as well as the knowledge she infused, to remind us of her.
Traveling to see her cherished grandchildren was a priority throughout her life, as well as long vacations in Hawaii, with George, where she learned new basket weaving techniques, drank Kona coffee, and just enjoyed life.
Barbara was early to bed, early to rise, drank her coffee black, believed in unions and civil rights, had a high tolerance of pain, never ate chocolate, and rarely complained. She was happiest doting on her family, especially her grandchildren. We will all miss her dearly.
Barbara was predeceased by two brothers, Dick and Carl, and one sister, Laura.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, George, as well as their eight children: Leah (Paul) Pastel; Matt (Debbie) Pfeifer of Arlington, TX; James (Joanne) Pfeifer of Fairport; Joseph Pfeifer of Liverpool; Teresa Pfeifer; Mary (Dr. David) Shapiro of Amherst; Jean Pfeifer (Michael Maclean) of Cape Vincent; and John (Amy) Pfeifer of Liverpool.
Also, fifteen "Grands," of which Barbara was immensely proud: grandchildren: Gwen, Craig and Colby Pastel; Billy (Catie) Pfeifer, Melissa Pfeifer, Christopher and Jenny Snowden; Krystina (Patrick) McClure, Daniel (Ashley Simpson) Pfeifer and Eric (Dr. Suzanna Law) Pfeifer; Alex Shapiro; Hannah and Maisie Pfeifer; and great-grandchildren: Tyler and Noah McClure.
Also survived by one brother, Edward of Texas and two sisters, Joyce of California and Dorothy of Missouri, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her family wishes to thank the staff at Elderwood, and the Crouse Hospital ICU for the care shown to Barbara over the past months, as well as the staff at Green Point over the past year. Special thanks to Father Zach Miller at Christ the King Church.
