Obituary

Cheryl S. (Shaw) Holmes, 75, of Liverpool, NY passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025. She was born in Ilion, NY to the late Roger and Virginia (McCoy) Shaw. She went to school in Frankfort, NY and continued her education at the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. She continued her career at Crouse Hospital, working in the NICU and PACU areas. Her nursing career was very fulfilling, and she would often bump into her patients and would share a warm word or two.

She was passionate about breeding Champion Norwich Terriers, one of which became fourth in the country. She was also passionate about the outdoors; training as a marathon runner, and paddling her kayak into the quiet reaches of Big Moose Lake. When the water was calm, she enjoyed rowing her one-man shell along the shores of the lake. She was a major volunteer at the Big Moose Chapel serving as a trustee for years. The "Winter Fest" would bring her up to Ottawa for skating in early February for several years and the call of the sand and warm waters would bring her down to the Outer Banks in mid-September through the 1990s. Traveling was high on her priority list; she visited both Europe and Central America many times.

On rainy or cold/winter days she could be found in her sewing room working on her quilts. She designed and created over one hundred quilts and was immensely proud that several of them became warm gifts at Honor Guard events at Hancock Field. She was a proud member of the Plank Road Quilt Guild.

She was predeceased by her parents, Virginia and Roger Shaw, her infant brother, Danny and her younger brother, Jeffrey.

Cheryl was the most wonderful wife, mother, and friend; always going above and beyond. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband of 31 years, Carlton H. Holmes; her two sons, John and Christopher Delia; her stepchildren, Kimberly (Jon) Walsh, Kristen (Matthew) Teeter and Gregory Holmes; her brother, Roger (Marge) Shaw; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
