Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Ross Philips on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was a proud graduate of East Meadow High School on Long Island, earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Syracuse University and received a master's degree in education from SUNY Oswego. A dedicated educator, Gary spent thirty-three years teaching mathematics at Liverpool High School in Liverpool, New York. During his tenure at Liverpool, Gary coached freshman soccer, softball, and boys' bowling, proudly leading the bowling team to a State Championship. His commitment extended far beyond the classroom; offering extra help after school, tutoring students, remembering nearly every student's birthday, first with handwritten cards, then phone calls, and later, thoughtful messages.

Gary will be remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and generations of students as a man of warmth, generosity, and deep curiosity—someone who truly cared about everyone he met. A lifelong fan of Syracuse University football and basketball, he rarely missed a home game in more than sixty years. He remained especially close to his Beta Sigma Rho fraternity brothers, organizing reunions and cherishing those friendships throughout his life.

Gary lived life with unmatched energy and enthusiasm. He was a marathon runner, a food aficionado and a master of surprises, known for unexpected gifts and heartfelt gestures that lit up the lives of those around him. He played tennis, basketball and softball multiple times a week and organized countless softball teams over the years. A passionate musician, he also played the accordion and ukulele, bringing joy and nostalgia wherever he performed.

An accomplished bridge player, Gary earned the title of Silver Life Master. He traveled to regional and national tournaments with his two primary partners, taught and directed games, mentored players at all levels, and even ran tournaments aboard cruise ships.

Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Sandra; his sons, Scott (Emily Roszkowski) Philips and Jonathan (Lauren) Philips and two cherished granddaughters, Josephine and Lyra. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Judith (Jordan) Soroko; niece, Merril (Greg) Chin; nephew, Jay (Amy) Soroko; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Taylor, Cassandra, Grace, Max, and Sam.
