Gordon L.
Harris
May 27, 1920 – December 1, 2023
Gordon L. Harris, a life-long Syracuse area resident for over a century, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, surrounded by his loving family, 103 years young. Gordon was born in Syracuse, NY, son of the late Monty and Emma (Spencer) Harris. He was united in marriage to the former Zelphia Ackles. Gordon grew up during the Great Depression, which shaped his life. He knew how to be a survivor. Gordon worked for the United States Postal Service for 34 years, retiring as a Supervisor at the Salina Station in Syracuse. He was an avid coin collector and toured over 30 states with his late wife, buying, selling and trading coins. This travel inspired Gordon and Zelphia to open their store, Upstate Coin and Stamp. Gordon was the author of New York State Scrip and Private Issues, which was published in 2001. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and was a life-time member of the American Numismatic Association. Gordon was also a snowbird for over 40 years, traveling to and from Sebring, FL. He was well loved by the servers at all the restaurants he visited in both places. Gordon was an avid historian and loved reading. His worldliness, intellect, wittiness and humor will be missed. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by his grandson, Philip J. Button II, five sisters and his brother.
Surviving are his four daughters; Susan (John) Kinne of Central Square, NY, Linda (Philip) Button of Liverpool, NY, Gloria (David) Capraro of Syracuse, NY and Julie Haskins of Liverpool, NY, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services and burial will be private.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Gordon's exceptional team led by his best friend and grandson, Rob, his granddaughter, Amy, grandson, Richard and caregiver, Kelly.
In lieu of flowers, consider contributions to Humane CNY, 4915 W. Taft Road, Liverpool, NY 13088.
