Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Helen Margaret (Pratt) Schmid, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to many on Monday, at the beautiful age of 92.

Helen was born on June 23, 1932 in Baldwinsville, NY, where she spent her entire life and became a cherished member of the community. A proud graduate of Baldwinsville High School, Class of 1949, Helen went on to lead a distinguished career in public service. She worked for Howard Johnson, the Town of Clay Police Department, the New York State Police and the Central NY Drug Task Force, retiring in 1990 after over 30 years of service. Her dedication to law enforcement and her passion to serve her community left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Helen was active in her community and volunteered for various charities. She was a lifetime member of the Moyers Corners Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Central NY Fireman's Association and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firefighters Association of The State of New York. Helen dedicated over 900 hours to Beaver Lake Nature Center and over the years lovingly volunteered at the Syracuse Home Assisted Living Facility, where she spent her last days in their loving care. Her unwavering support for local law enforcement and her acts of kindness made her a cornerstone of the Baldwinsville community where her legacy will continue on throughout the years.

Helen's legacy is one of service, kindness and an open heart. Her generosity, strength, love and devotion for her family and community will always be remembered. Helen loved adventures, road trips and traveled around the world to far away places like Alaska, Hawaii and Germany. To know Helen is to know her love for sweets and going out to eat, which was a favorite thing of hers to do.

Helen's love for her family, as she watched it continue to grow over the years, grew exponentially and she deeply cherished the relationships that were built. She is predeceased by her parents, George Hartson and Ethel Marie (Evans) Pratt and her sister, Betty Hanlon.

She is survived by her children, Douglas A. Schmid and Debra Madsen, and her extended family. Also surviving are her grandchildren; Amanda (Aaron), Jenn, Lee and Tabitha, great-grandchildren; Abigale, Alicia, Brittany (Anthony), Jake, Quinn and Will, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
