Joan M.
Sweet
March 29, 1953 – April 28, 2025
It is with profound sadness we announce the death of Joan Marie Sweet (O'Brien). Joan passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 28, 2025.
Joan was born and raised in Syracuse, the third of eight children, to the late Norbert F. O'Brien and M. Jeanette O'Brien. She was incredibly proud of her O'Brien roots, her brothers and sisters and all of their accomplishments. Her brothers and sisters were also responsible for that fateful day when Joan finally met the love of her life, Ernest Lee Sweet. Marrying shortly after they met, they spent their lives loving each other and raising three daughters, Jennifer, Barbara and Diana.
In her early years, Joan was an amazing gardener, sharing her plants and helping neighbors with their gardens. She would always plant her garden the day of an impending storm and most times would even plant in the rain.
Adored and loved by all who met her, Joan gave that love back ten-fold. Loving and devoted wife, mother & grandmother, she truly was the heart of our family. Joan took great pride and joy in her first grandchild, Macadian. He was the apple of her eye and she poured every ounce of her heart into him. She even taught him to play baseball in her kitchen! Many thanks to Macadian for his love, support and caregiving over the last few years. Life became even busier for Joan when Aloura, daughter of Diana was born. Aloura was her sunshine, her biggest smile, her baby as she called her forever. Joan became a travel warrior for a few years, driving back and forth from Syracuse to Vermont to spend time with both Macadian and Aloura. Joan was thrilled and overjoyed when Mckenna, Jenny's daughter was born. From tea parties to bubbles, Joan showered McKenna with love and laughter.
To know Joan was to love Joan, she would light up a room with her smile. Although she is gone now, she will forever be remembered for the love and care she showed everyone. She always had the time to talk with anyone who needed support, love and maybe even a little guidance.
In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her brother, Norbert O'Brien; sister, Maureen Mather and dearest friend, Tracy L. Ross.
She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Ernest Lee Sweet; daughters, Jennifer (Thomas Chapin), Barbara (Stephen Sorrell) and Diana Sweet; grandchildren, Macadian Sweet, Aloura Kozakiewicz and McKenna Chapin; sisters, Kathleen (Joseph Ewart), Maureen (Michael Mather), Mary (Michael Quinn) and Margaret (Craig Hall); brothers, James (Therese) O'Brien and William O'Brien; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved with all of her heart. Joan is also survived by her constant companion and friend of 15 years, her little dog Rosie.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2025 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 State Rt 31, Baldwinsville, NY 13027. A funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm at the funeral home.
To say Joan will be greatly missed would be an understatement. May Joan's love live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
