Joanna Marie
Wojdyla
January 7, 1927 – February 9, 2023
Joanna Marie (Grasso) Wojdyla, 96, of Liverpool, NY returned to her Heavenly Father on Thursday at her daughter's home in Liverpool. Born in 1927 in Syracuse, NY to immigrant parents, the late Salvatore and Rosina (DiMauro) Grasso, Joanna grew up on the Northside. Widowed at the age of 29, she worked hard to keep her family together by taking on domestic jobs, later becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, retiring from Plaza Nursing Home in Syracuse. Joanna's mantra was "Determination" believing anything was possible as long as you never give up.
As a Girl Scout Leader for 20 years, she taught her Scouts how to sew, cook and bake. She instilled in them the love of flowers, nature and art. Joanna was an avid gardener, it was in her garden she felt closest to God. She was a member of the Liverpool Garden Club and a life-long active parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Ronald A. Wojdyla, two sisters, Yolanda Georgiana and Mary Moro and her brother, Albert Grasso.
She leaves behind to remember her spirit, her three daughters; Judy W. (Ken) Sokolowski, Deborah (Tom) DePaull of Louisville, KY and Ronda (David) Brockway of Mechanicsburg, PA, four grandchildren; Stephanie Sokolowski, Christian Sokolowski, Gregory DePaull and Jenna Depaull, two step-grandchildren, Kurt (Kelly) Sokolowski and Karly Sokolowski, her sister, Helen Poulsen as well as serval nieces and nephews.
A calling hour will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 425 Beechwood Avenue, Liverpool, NY 13088 with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 12:00 pm. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery.
