John L.
Fleming
May 29, 1936 – August 1, 2022
John Lewis Fleming, 86, died peacefully at The Syracuse Home at McHarrie Place on August 1 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. John was born in 1936 in Ogdensburg, NY, to John and Marjorie Fleming. After graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy, John enlisted in the US Air Force, where he conceived a life-long love of flight. After four years in the Strategic Air Command, he returned home to upstate NY and went to work with his father at Niagara Mohawk in Syracuse. He remained at NiMo, a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, until his retirement at age 57.
In 1976, John wedded the love of his life, Lois Greuling, the second marriage for both of them. With a combined eight children, their home was always busy, but they made time for sailing, traveling to Canada and Scotland, and trips to New York for musicals. They retired to Springmoor in the village of Liverpool, where they were active members of the community.
John had the mind of an engineer and the hands of a Swiss clockmaker. He was known for his deep involvement in his hobbies, which included one-of-a-kind handwoven miniature baskets, hand-loomed tartans, delicate paper models and 3-D virtual railroad design, for which he taught himself CAD. He was a championship sail plane pilot, who also flew radio planes, drones, and exquisite rice paper kites he made himself. He was proud of his work on restoring a 1931 Curtiss-Wright Junior for the Curtiss Aviation Museum.
John was predeceased by his parents and wife Lois.
He is survived by his brother, William Fleming, children; Duane (Pam) Fleming, Julia Hugo-Vidal, John (Debby) Fleming, Tim Fleming, Barbara (Dan) Scheeler, Dyan (Beth) Fleming, Patrick (Julia) Lent and Scott (Jaime) Fleming, as well as 20 grandchildren.
