Obituary

Jon Andrew Hawkinson, 77, of Liverpool, NY passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 surrounded by his family. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father and grandfather.

Jon was born to Elsie and Arthur Hawkinson in Wilmington, Delaware on June 29, 1946. He grew up on Layton's Lake in Penns Grove, New Jersey. He received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in 1968 and shortly thereafter his Masters degrees from Syracuse University. Jon married the love of his life, the former Ramsay S. Stewart on June 8, 1969. They shared 54 incredible years together.

Jon was a loyal and dedicated father. Always there with the video camera recording every school and extracurricular activity of his children. He loved creating scrapbooks of his own nature photography and his family. He has preserved and left them with an abundance of beautiful memories to always share and cherish their time with him here on earth.

Jon was a great educator. He taught special education and adapted physical education for BOCES for over 30 years. He was a counselor at Camp Onaway in Bristol, New Hampshire where he taught sailing, swimming and ran the trip program for many years. Jon spent a lot of his time doing the activities in nature that brought him joy. Gardening both flowers and vegetables, snowshoeing, hiking, birdwatching, nature photography and volunteering at Beaver Lake Nature Center. He had a delightful sense of humor, loved to make those around him smile and laugh with his jokes and stories. He could light up a room.

Jon was fascinated by world history, literature, science and nature. He loved to read, broaden his mind. He was particularly interested in World War II and science fiction novels, along with a hot cup of black coffee, of course. He had a true love and affinity for film and the arts as well. He sang in his church choir and the Syracuse Oratorio Society with his wife for many years. He loved to attend musicals, plays and see movies with his children whenever he had the chance.

Jon is survived by his wife Ramsay, five children: Kirk, Nathan, Douglas, MiKayla and Kaitlyn, six grandchildren; Docianna, Nevaeh, Callie, Christopher Jr, Kaleb and Keilani and his siblings; Erik, Carl, Bruce, Anne and Jane.

Jon wanted to donate his body to Upstate Medical University for student research. "You can be useful to further the education of young minds even after your soul leaves" he said. He requested to not have traditional funeral services but rather a celebration of life held for his family and friends to reminisce on the sweet, wonderful, abundant life he led. He will be truly missed.

Above all Jon was a man of God, a good Christian man. He put his faith and trust in the Lord and he is now home and at peace.
