Obituary

Judith K. Holmes, 81, of Liverpool, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024 after a lengthy hospitalization following surgery. Judith was born July 19, 1942 to Charles and Virginia Kopecky in Hartford, CT. Judith graduated from Baker High school in Baldwinsville, NY and attended Crane School of Music at Potsdam University for a year where she played violin.

Judy was married to Dr. Gerald L. Marketos shortly after and gave birth to her son, Leon (Jerry) Marketos. They moved to Bologna, Italy where they lived for several years. Judy developed a passion for the country, its people, culture, and language. She taught herself to read and speak Italian, a skill she enjoyed for the remainder of her life.

She moved back to the States and gave birth to her second child, Stephen D. Marketos. Shortly after, Judy relocated to Liverpool, NY where she remained, raising her children through high school before moving back to Baldwinsville. Judy worked most of her life managing properties, retiring after many years acting as Building Manager at the Empire Building in Syracuse.

Judy enjoyed birding, gardening, growing plants and flowers, and at one time owned a business growing cultivars of African Violets, learning from the legend Ethel Champion. Judy chose the name for Ethel's variety, "Tiffany Trinket." Judy was also an avid knitter, sewer, and stitcher. Her later years were devoted primarily to completing complex specialty stitching pieces designed by Thea Dueck of Victoria Sampler fame. Her work was exquisite.

She was a proud grandmother to Stephen's daughter, Laurann, and enjoyed helping raise her every chance she could. Judy passed along her love for cooking and baking to Stephen and Laurann as well.

Judy was remarried to Lynn A. Holmes and developed a close relationship with his son, Tim and wife Terri, and son, Tom and wife Karen. Judy enjoyed watching all her step-grandchildren and subsequent step-great-grandchildren grow up.

Above all, Judy was a warm, compassionate, woman of simple taste who loved her family more than anything else. She was fiercely loyal and a good friend and listener to many people throughout the years. She was a counselor to anyone who needed a shoulder. She was selfless, always putting others' needs before her own. She will be deeply missed.

Judy is predeceased by her husband, Lynn, her brother, Cliff Kopecky, and her sister, Jean Kopecky.

She is survived by her youngest sister, Jane (William) Granger of Kernersville, NC, 2 sons, Leon G. (Crystal) Marketos of Weedsport, NY and Stephen D. Marketos of Weedsport, NY, sister-in-law, Carol Kopecky of Marcellus, a granddaughter, and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours or services at Judy's request.
