Lawrence Oliver Comfort died after a brief illness at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, New York, on Thursday, at the age of 90. Larry was born and raised in Elmira, New York, to the late Oliver and Bessie (nee Sawdey) Comfort. He graduated from Southside High School, where he was a decorated track athlete, excelling in hurdles, played trombone and sang in a barbershop quartet. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1954 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1954 to 1956. Larry had a fulfilling career as an electrical engineer, beginning with IBM in Binghamton and then General Electric and Carrier in Syracuse. He retired from Lockheed Martin in 1991. He is remembered as a loving husband, father, son and brother. He was a devoted Popop to his grandchildren and brought out the best of everyone he ever met. He was extremely patient and kind, lending a hand whenever necessary. Larry was a dedicated volunteer with Francis House and Samaritan Center. He also provided spiritual care to patients at Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital. He was a generous donor to many causes.
Earlier in his life he was an actor and producer for the Clay Town Players. He sang with the Syracuse University Oratorio Society and Syracuse Chorale. He was a softball coach for his daughters' youth softball teams. Over the years he served as cantor, reader, and Eucharistic minister at Christ the King Church in Liverpool. Larry was an avid cyclist and member of the Onondaga Cycling Club. He was a talented woodworker, making furniture for family and constructing an altar and other liturgical pieces for the church. He and Mary Frances loved to travel and toured more than 20 countries together. They were both members of various dance clubs.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Frances Comfort of Liverpool, NY; three daughters, Marianne Comfort (Ted Conwell) of Silver Spring, MD, Carolyn (Mark) Cantrell of Denver, CO, and Kathleen (Larry) Salas of Salem, MA; his four grandchildren, Olivia and Rose Cantrell, and Fiona and Ben Salas; his two sisters, Louise O'Hare and Shirley (Bob) Greenough; and many nieces and nephews.
