Lawrence "Larry" D. Twomey, 86, of Liverpool, NY passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. He was born in Manhattan, NYC on March 31, 1937 to Adele and Herbert Twomey.
Larry was a 1959 graduate of Syracuse University and lettered all four years as a member of the varsity track and cross-country team. He began teaching in the Syracuse City School District and retired from the Liverpool Central School District as a teacher and administrator. A lifelong educator, he continued substitute teaching until he was 80 years old, often commenting on the kindness and respectfulness of the students.
He could not go anywhere without bumping into a former student and would often hear about the impression he made on them. He was an adjunct instructor at Onondaga Community College for 20 years and served in the U.S. Air Force in Phalsbourg, France during the l96l Berlin Crisis. Larry was an avid SU sports fan, loved watching baseball and the Kentucky Derby and playing cards. He enjoyed traveling and loved a good joke. He liked history and current events, and his opinion was often sought and always valued. Larry could talk to anyone and will be remembered for his contagious smile, his storytelling and his love of family. He is predeceased by his son, Kevin, and brother, Raymond.
Larry is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 63 years, Marina, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Donald Hammack, of Oviedo, FL, and Lisa and Erick Holm, of West Granby, CT, six greatly loved grandchildren, Emily, Stephanie, Kay and Faith Hammack and Lily and Evan Holm, as well as four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Donna Twomey, and his cousin, Daniel Armstrong.
A calling hour will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in Christ the King Church, 21 Cherry Tree Circle, Liverpool, NY 13090, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 am. The Rite of Committal and burial will take place in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery at a future time and date to be announced.
