Obituary

Linda June McMahon passed away on July 1, 2024 after battling mantle cell lymphoma. She was born on April 6, 1944 to Rex and June Rogers in Fairview, PA. Linda was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.

In her childhood, she attended a one room schoolhouse in rural Fairview until moving to the slightly less rural Westfield, NY in 1955. In Westfield, her family lived in a truly historic brick house, where many family reunions were held throughout the following years. Although Linda and her three siblings (Myrt, Gerry, and Janet) moved miles (and continents) apart, they remained in close contact over the years. Linda's career aspiration was to teach, and she attended SUNY Fredonia to obtain her education degree. She worked several summers at Chautauqua Institute and also in Lake Placid. After graduation from college, she and a few friends drove across the country (in her brand-new car) to California, then flew to Hawaii, then drove back home. This began her lifelong love of travel.

In 1969, after teaching for a few years, Linda met Joseph E. McMahon on a blind date set up by mutual friends. True love ensued, and they were married later that year. They initially lived in Buffalo, NY then moved to the Syracuse area, settling in Baldwinsville in 1972, where daughters Megan and Lara grew up. Linda put her teaching career on hold in order to focus on raising the girls, who very much appreciated the time and energy and adventures they took, even if they didn't always act like it. During this time, she held roles of Girl Scout Troop Leader and Baldwinsville Presbyterian Church Christian Education Director. She also coerced daughter Megan into taking harp lessons with her, and is probably one of very few people with a harp in her living room.

As the girls got older, Linda resumed her teaching career at Elden elementary school. She taught, guided, mentored, and motivated many young 4th and 5th grade students throughout her career and retired in 2002. Following retirement, she became a Deacon with the Baldwinsville Presbyterian Church and was on the Female Charitable Society Board of Directors for many years.

Linda loved many things in life. She appreciated life's little treasures and tried to instill that appreciation in her daughters and grandsons, nieces and nephews, and students. She had a love of the outdoors, of beautiful skies and sunsets, of the robin's springtime song. Music and art were an important part of Linda's life. She bought each of her grandsons a musical instrument in hopes of sharing that enjoyment. Reading books was another thing she valued and often had several going at one time. Linda always had time to read books with her daughters and grandsons while growing up, and her students enjoyed her read aloud book time as well.

Linda's love of reading extended to travel magazines, which led to planning trips, which led to taking trips! She traveled to many places including Italy (where she "lost" Megan and Lara in the depths of St. Peters Basilica), Scotland (where she, Joe, Megan, and Lara stayed in a haunted castle), and Venezuela (did you ever hear about Linda's Venezuelan bus ride?!). Two of her favorite places to visit were Hawaii (where Joe and Linda nearly experienced a tsunami) and Amelia Island in Florida, where they spent many winters. She and Joe once traveled across the US in a small Roadtrek van, and drove to Oklahoma to visit Megan, Robert, Andrew, Justin, and Brian. In 2006, Linda and Joe bought a house in Sackets Harbor and were able to enjoy many special times with Lara, John, Cale, Connor, and Caden.

Linda truly enjoyed spending time with family. When the girls were young, cousins were rotated through Baldwinsville during summer months, and time together was spent in Westfield, at camp in PA, or the cottage in Angola. Once Linda became a grandmother, you could often find her orchestrating family game nights and walks together, especially in Sackets Harbor. She took time to talk with and listen to her grandsons, and was able to spend a lot of time with them all, especially during the summer. She inquired about their activities and interests, and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Linda kept a journal of the unique things the grandkids said, remembered them, and reminded us of them on a regular basis. She taught us the importance of showing kindness and compassion to others. She enjoyed many birthday celebrations, sporting events, and holidays with family and created many special memories with them that will be treasured for years to come.

Linda is survived by her devoted husband, Joseph McMahon, and their dog Rudy; daughter, Megan (Robert) Woodall and grandsons Andrew (Dawn), Justin, and Brian Woodall; daughter, Lara McMahon (John) LaDuc and grandsons, Cale, Connor, and Caden LaDuc, sisters, Myrt Peterson and Janet (Hasan) Tezel and brother, Gerry Rogers and many nieces and nephews.
