Obituary

Lucille (Cooper) Johnson, a longtime resident of Fair Haven and most recently of Oswego, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023 at the age of 101. Lucille was born on October 9, 1922 in Fair Haven, NY to Maurice and Marion (Howell) Cooper. She attended Fair Haven School and graduated high school as Salutatorian. Lucille continued her education at Geneseo College, graduating in 1944 with a major in Library Science.

In June 1946, Lucille married Robert Wilkinson of Fair Haven, NY. They were the loving parents of Susan and Christine. Lucille and Robert raised their daughters in their home on Richmond Ave, where Lucille resided for 68 years. Due to Robert's health, they spent their winters in Arizona, where they had the company of family and friends. Lucille continued to travel to Arizona after Robert's death in 1990.

Over the course of her career, Lucille was a librarian at Oswego Schools, Fair Haven School, Oswego Public Library, and as a volunteer at Fair Haven Public Library where she created their card catalog by hand. She retired as a librarian in 1978. Her love of teaching and reading transcended generations from her daughter's careers in education and library settings, bringing her grandchildren to the Fair Haven library, to reading to her great-grandchildren at any opportunity.

Lucille was fortunate to find love twice and married Bob Johnson, of Oregon in 1993. Together they spent winters in Arizona and summers in Fair Haven, and enjoyed traveling to new places. Bob brought laughter and love to Lucille's life until his passing in 2009.

While Lucille was incredibly proud of her family and loved to tell stories or show pictures to anyone who visited, her family was even more proud of her for her many accomplishments, wit, and tenacity for life. Lucille went to college during a time when it was uncommon for women to further their education, she was an active participant in her church and community, provided loving care as a spouse, never missed an opportunity to support her children or grandchildren's milestones, took care of her health, and loved her family fiercely without reservation. She often showed her love through her strawberry shortcake, black raspberry pies, and checking the weather wherever you lived or might be traveling.

Anyone who knew her would argue 101 years was still not enough time with such a beautiful, loving, and kind soul. We are blessed she was ours and we will continue to see her in every firework on the 4th of July or sunset over Lake Ontario.  Lucille is predeceased in death by her parents, son-in-law, Donald Neault, and sister, Margaret Ward.

Surviving to cherish Lucille's memory are her children, Susan Neault and Christine (John) Staren, her grandchildren; Michael (Sarah) Neault, Jeffrey (Shi-Jing) Neault, Jessica (Matthew) Somweber, and Matthew (Manuela) Staren, six great-grandchildren; Wesley, Callahan, Novae, Elijah, Evelyn, and Noomi, stepchildren; Ron (Diane) Johnson and Judy (Jim) Zimmerman and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A special acknowledgement to her incredible caregivers who provided her with love and comfort.

A Memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life which was filled with an immense amount of love.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Lucille's memory can be made to Fair Haven Community Church or Fair Haven Public Library, as it would be deeply appreciated.
