Obituary

M. Rosalind "Roz" Otis, 97, of Liverpool passed away peacefully with her family by her side on March 20, 2025. Born and raised in Rochester, NY, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Irene Sommer. She was a graduate of Nazareth Academy and Marywood College. Roz was an Elementary school teacher in the Jamesville Dewitt and North Syracuse school districts before staying home to raise her family.

She worked as a substitute teacher in the Liverpool and Baldwinsville school districts. Roz was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels of Liverpool, and the Onondaga County Board of Elections. She was a member of the Civic Social Club of Syracuse. She had a deep Catholic faith and was a communicant for over 55 years at her beloved Christ the King Church, where she was a member of the altar cleaning committee and Hearts of Joy group. In her retirement years she enjoyed traveling, spending time with friends and family, reading, playing bunco and backgammon, and watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She is predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Edward F. Otis in 2000.

She is survived by two daughters, Maureen (Steven) Nieves of New Jersey and Madeline (Daniel) Shanahan of Camillus, four sons; Michael (Deardria) Otis of North Carolina, Christopher Otis of Liverpool, Gregory (Shaun McGovern) Otis of Portugal, and Thomas (Barbara Jones) Otis of Manlius, 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all of Roz's wonderful caregivers for the compassionate care they provided these last several years which allowed her to stay at home. We are beyond grateful for them.
