Marion E.
Thurn
May 18, 1925 – May 18, 2024
Marion Elizabeth (Stone) Thurn, 99, of North Syracuse, died peacefully at home on May 18, 2024. Marion was born on May 18, 1925 in Fredonia, New York, to Henry J. Stone and Antoinette (Lewis) Stone.
A graduate of Fredonia High School in 1942, and of the Fredonia Teachers College in 1946, Marion went on to teach second graders for two years (1946-48) at the Fifth Avenue School in Bayshore, Long Island, and for several more years (1948-52) in Kenmore, New York.
Marion married her high school sweetheart, Henry J. Thurn, in August 1948, and celebrated 53 years of marriage in 2001. Marion and Henry honeymooned in Niagara Falls, and later enjoyed an extended overseas adventure during the summer of 1951, when they drove 8500 miles to visit most of the countries of Europe.
After a series of work-related moves following the war, Marion and Henry settled in N. Syracuse, where they raised a family of eight children. As a mother, wife, daughter, and sister, Marion was selflessly devoted to her family, drawing on remarkable resources of character to do what was necessary for others while asking little for herself. She lived by the virtues of a well-governed life: a clearsighted intelligence, a quiet strength, a clarity of purpose, a forgiving kindness, and a deep sense of responsibility for others.
While she possessed almost stoic powers of self-containment, Marion was also quick to laugh, and had a cheerful spontaneity, a lively sense of humor, and a deep capacity for joy. An avid reader, Marion's love for books expressed her wide-ranging curiosity about all aspects of life beyond her own. Down to earth by temperament, Marion was also close to the earth, the daughter of a great outdoorsman, whose older relatives cultivated grapes, tomatoes, and pine trees. This background gave her a deep appreciation for the variety of life that appeared each year in her backyard gardens with the coming of spring. Amidst the changing of the seasons and the many vicissitudes of her long life, Marion remained a steady, joyful presence for all who knew and loved her.
Marion lived for nearly a century, and her continued happiness and independence during the last decade of her life were made possible in large part by her daughters, Mary and Martha, who showed an exemplary devotion in the unfailing support and loving care they provided for her. For this the family would like to acknowledge an immense debt of gratitude. We are also grateful to the staff of Hospice of Central New York, who provided expert compassionate care and support over the last three months. Donations may be made to this wonderful service at Hospice Foundation of Central NY, 990 Seventh North St. Liverpool, NY 13088.
Marion was predeceased by her husband Henry (July 9, 2001) and by her sister Betty (October 6, 2001).
Marion is survived by her children; Anne (Jon), David (Carol), Martha (Bob), Mary, John, Karen (Jeff), Daniel (Kim), and James, grandchildren; Benjamin (Sabrina), Adam (Megan), Michelle, Nick (Emma), Jennell (Chad), John (Katia), James (Jennifer), Julia, and Eric, and great-grandchildren; Bailey, Angel, Owen, Andrew, Erica, Naomi, and Arthur.
Services will be private.
