Obituary

On Saturday August 19, 2023, Mary Dawn (Weeks) Hendricks, passed peacefully with her beloved dog by her side, after a valiant fight with cancer.

Mary was a devoted family member who shared her enduring positive and joyous energy with her large extended family. She was the first person in her family to attend college, earning a Bachelor's degree at Edinboro College in PA and a Master's degree in Art Education at Elmira College.  As a mother, she was magically creative and imaginative, making a child's wildest fantasies, reality.  Mary was a nurturer and shared her spiritual love and knowledge of nature, with all who loved her. Friends were drawn to her wry sense of humor and were honored with her loyal and magnanimous friendship.

Mary was a fiercely talented and creative artist and art teacher, who dabbled in all mediums of art including 2D art and painting, 3D art, photography, digital media, jewelry making, landscape art, furniture building, cooking, gardening and many other forms. She was an art teacher at Horseheads High School for over 25 years and gave effortlessly to her students and colleagues, supporting them in ways far beyond the educational walls. She was never afraid to try something new and was always internally inspired in her originality of everything she designed. Creativity ran through her blood and her perpetual intrinsic innovation abounded until the end. Her zest for lifelong learning was a model for all who were lucky enough to learn and work alongside her.

Throughout her life, Mary was a dedicated and loving pet owner who was generously charitable to so many organizations including the SPCA, Humane Society, North Shore Animal League, National Wildlife Federation, Rainforest Fund, Nature Conservatory, DAV, Wounded Warrior Project, St. Bonaventure Indian Mission and School, Boys Town, American Cancer Society and so many more. Charitable contributions to any of these organizations (or any others that support animals, children or nature) in Mary's name, would be honorable.

She is survived by her devoted and loving daughter, Edria "Edye" (Larry) Bonanni of Syracuse, NY, two brothers, Lew Weeks of Wasilla, AK and Richard "Dick" Weeks of Hopewell, VA, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Mary is predeceased by her parents, Amber Edria (Clyne) Weeks and Allen Burr Weeks, as well as her two sisters, Shirley (Weeks) Campbell and Alberta (Weeks) Keck.

She will be eternally loved and missed but her larger-than-life sprit will live on in the remarkable memories she left behind. She was a mentor for life and how to live to the fullest.

At the request of Mary, there will be no formal services.

Please sign the Maurer Funeral Home online guestbook for Mary to express your condolences to her family.
