Obituary

Mary Joyce Harrington Serrao, 90, of Liverpool, NY, died peacefully on September 10, 2023, close to her family. Mary was born on May 21, 1933 to the late Eugene and the late Anna (Bourg) Harrington.  A high-achieving student, Mary attended St. Brigid's grammar school and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1951. Mary enjoyed learning throughout her life and enrolled in English courses at Syracuse University after high school. After working at the State Insurance Fund for a time, she worked for 6 years at the New York State parole office, and at Catholic Charities of Onondaga County for 15 years as a parent aide and in elder services, spending over two decades in the field of social work.

Mary was devoted to her family and raised three daughters with her husband of 66 years, Dominick Serrao. They were married on May 23, 1957 at St. Brigid's Church in Syracuse. She faithfully attended all of her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, performances, and ceremonies.

Mary had a rich social life and enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies. She shared a love of dance with her husband. Mary and Dominick were longtime members of several ballroom dance groups, including the LACE dance club, of which Mary and Nick were president for many years. An accomplished shuffleboard player, Mary began a shuffleboard club which met at Onondaga Lake Park. Mary closely followed SU basketball and the Buffalo Bills, and often invited friends and family to join her in the living room to watch games.

She maintained close friendships with her high school classmates throughout her life, and regularly met with them at a lunch club. As an avid, lifelong reader, she also participated in several book and film clubs at her local library. A committed, longtime parishioner of St. Joseph the Worker Church, Mary was also a volunteer Eucharistic minister and a member of the St. Joseph seniors club.

In addition to her strong community ties, Mary also nurtured a love of travel. She spent many happy Februarys in St. Pete Beach, FL, often accompanied by her husband and other family members. Some of her other travel destinations included Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Hawaii, and the Southwestern US.

Mary is predeceased by her brother, William Harrington; her nephew, Patrick Harrington; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Harrington; her brother-in-law, Bruno Joseph Serrao; and her son-in-law, Daniel Huffaker.

She is survived by her husband, Dominick Serrao; her brother, Eugene (Allie) Harrington; her daughters; Janette (Daniel) Rice, Nancy Huffaker, and Patricia Serrao; her nine nieces and nephews, several cousins, six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.

Mary will be greatly missed by her family and friends, all of whom she cherished, and who will remember her for her generosity, vivacity, and dedication to her loved ones.
