Dr. Michael J. Maselly, 73, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 20, 2023 in Syracuse, N.Y.  Dr. Maselly was born on November 2, 1949 in Syracuse, N.Y. to late Mary Louise (Gabor) and Joseph C. Maselly. He attended Manhattan College and received his medical degree from the Autonomous Universidad de Guadalajara, and went on for further training at Loyola University in Chicago.

He was offered an opportunity to become a Navy surgeon and served on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower as their ship's doctor and remained in the Navy with additional posts at Bethesda Naval Hospital, stints in the Philippines, Italy, and Spain. Eventually, he relocated to California and practiced with the Kay Group as well as at Long Beach Medical Center. He returned to Syracuse and was in a private group practice. He was board certified in Vascular Surgery and General Surgery.

Mike was known for his passionate feelings about all things related to his Italian heritage, S.U. basketball under Jim Boeheim and N.Y. Yankees baseball. He had a phenomenal memory and love of history. He could recall neighborhood buddies, favorite restaurants and the best meals he had there, and extensive details about family history, legends and stories.

He is survived by his sister, Lisa (Harold) Sasser, nephew, Logan Sasser, both of Raleigh, N.C., niece, Hannah Sasser of Mexico City and his partner, Janice Rush Pitcher of Baldwinsville, N.Y.  He also leaves behind his faithful schnoodle, Zoey.

Memorial services and final resting place for Dr. Maselly will be scheduled at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
