Phyllis A. Hines, 77, of Liverpool passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024. She was born in Elmira, NY to Charles and Catherine (Melvin) Fillmore on August 6, 1947. She graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1965 and earned a Nursing certificate from St. Joseph's School of Nursing. Phyllis joined the US Army, serving as a nurse in the 95th Evacuation Hospital (MASH UNIT) in Da Nang, South Vietnam (1971-72). She was later stationed at Brook Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, where she also worked in the Emergency Department at Bexar County Medical Center. Her enlistment was extended to care for former President Lyndon Johnson and later serving as a personal nurse for former First Lady, Mamie Eisenhower.
After her Army discharge in 1972, Phyllis was recruited by Humana Corp. as the Director of Nursing to open a new Regional Medical Center in Hobbs, New Mexico. She worked for Humana for 7 years. In 1974, she met her future husband and upon marriage in 1979, she resigned and moved back to New York. Phyllis worked as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department at Rochester General Hospital for 17 years. She later became a Nurse Consultant for two law firms and a Medical Liability Insurance Company, retiring in 2012.
Phyllis is predeceased by her mother and father Catherine A. (Melvin) and Charles F. Fillmore, her sister and brother-in-law Lois and Vincent Chorney, and her nephew, Matthew Merriam.
She is survived by her loving husband, John C. Hines, of Liverpool, daughter, Megan (Michael) Staples of Penfield, sons, Michael (Keeley) Hines of Liverpool, Patrick (PJ) Hines and fiancé Kara Rossi of Buffalo, step-daughter, Teresa Melendez, of Liverpool, sisters, Clare (Dennis) Smith and Kathleen (Joseph) Merriam both of Webster, brother, William Fillmore of Katy, TX, grandchildren; Jack and Charles Staples, Gabby and Ava Hines, Carmino Rossi Hines, step-grandchildren, Matthew and Kristen Melendez, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express gratitude for the care provided by The Hearth at Greenpoint, Hospice of CNY, and last but not least, Francis House.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, December 27, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home, Inc. 300 Second Street, Liverpool, NY 13088. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 10:00 am in Pope John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 8290 Soule Rd., Liverpool, NY 13090. The Rite of Committal and burial will follow in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Baldwinsville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Francis House, 108 Michaels Ave., Syracuse, NY 13208 to allow for their continued mission and support of our community.
