Obituary

Richard "Dick" A. Gerharz, 87, of Liverpool passed away on Tuesday from complications due to COVID-19. He was born and raised on the Northside of Syracuse, son of the late Ewald and Emilie (Schmidt) Gerharz. He graduated from North High, and married his childhood sweetheart, the former Joan S. Vickery. In his early 20's he enlisted in the US Army, proudly serving his country. Dick began his employment at the age of 16 with Spiros Restaurant Company, working his way up to the Director of Operations. He then left Spiros to start the first of three successful businesses. Along with his childhood friend, Dick opened The Old Schoolroom Tavern in North Syracuse, NY. After selling the tavern, he founded Gerharz Restaurant Equipment and Supplies Inc. and four years later, Gerharz Coca-Cola Distributors. For over 50 years in business, Dick's success came from his hard work ethic and dedication to his business. He was all about helping countless local restaurants and businesses get started and succeed. Dick always viewed his customers as friends and was active in the community supporting many local charities. He was a member of the VFW and a communicant of Assumption Church in Syracuse. Dick is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Joan S. Gerharz and his brother, John K. Gerharz.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his two sons, Richard M. Gerharz of Syracuse, NY and Scott A. (Angela) Gerharz of Baldwinsville, NY, three grandchildren, Griffin, Sydney and Joseph Gerharz, his sister, Ann M. Gerharz of Liverpool and several nieces and nephews.
