Ronald D. Gapski "The Gapper" 80 years old, passed away at his home in Brooksville, FL on Friday, December 16, 2022.
He was born in Liverpool, NY to Stanley and Mary (Miller) Gapski and lived in the Mattydale and Central Square areas until retiring and moving to Brooksville, FL in 2017. A 1960 graduate of Liverpool High School, he was always a Warrior fan.
Ron was always an avid fan of baseball, football and car racing enthusiast. In his youth Ron, his cousin and friend raced cars. He was the crew chief and mechanic on several racing teams for decades. Many years spent with Johnny and AJ Michaels' racing team, snowmobile and stock car racing at Fulton and Oswego raceways. He always had a passion to race. He finally built his own SuperModified in the late 70s and raced at Oswego Speedway with many competitors, family and friends by his side supporting him. He finished his racing career as crew chief for Phil Claussen until retiring and watching NASCAR from the stands. His working career started with Weimer construction as a Syracuse Union Laborer. He was a talented heavy equipment operator during his many years of construction work with Bud Wright. Ron helped family members and friends over the years with his gift of carpentry skills. For several years, he was the fleet mechanic for Netti Beverage and the Colucci family. Prior to his retirement he was the heavy equipment operator for Sherman Construction. If Ron wasn't at work or the race track, he could be found hunting in Erieville, NY with his grandson and many hunting friends over the years.
If you knew Ron, you knew his love for his growing family and his dear friends. He never missed a celebration with his family. Ron will be especially missed by his dogs, Snitch and Trixie, as they were always by his side.
He is predeceased by his son, Stanley Ronald and brothers, Robert and James.
Surviving to cherish his legacy is his wife, Laurie Gapski of 26 years. Brother, Gary of Liverpool, NY, daughter Patricia (Keith) Shorney of Cayuga, NY, grandchildren; Nicole (Mark) Vazquez, Matthew (Kelsey) Shorney and Chelsea Guilfoil, great-grandchildren; Anthony, Mariah, Henrik and Emma and, Conor due in June 2023, stepdaughters, Stephanie Parish and Cassie Hart both of Brooksville, FL, grandchildren, Jacob and Alivia Castle and Lexus Parish, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm with a funeral service to follow at 3:00 pm at Maurer Funeral Home, Inc. 300 Second Street, Liverpool, NY 13088. Inurnment will be in the Spring, 2023 in Pine Plains Cemetery, Clay, NY.
