Stephen Sehnert, 84 of Liverpool died Saturday, August 8, 2026 at home with his wife Kathy by his side. Steve grew up in Jamesville NY with his parents Bob and Eileen, sisters, Gretchen and Jill, all of whom predeceased him. Steve graduated from J-D High School and the New York State College of Forestry at the Ranger School in Wanakena, NY. He was proud to be a “Stumpy”.

The Ranger School and Limekiln Lake in the Adirondack Mountains held Steve’s heart hostage for his entire life. Growing up, Steve and his family spent their yearly vacations on the beach at Reed’s camp. As an adult, and with his own family, Steve continued the tradition for more than seven decades up until this past July. The family wishes to thank lifelong friend Liz Reed from Fayetteville and Limekiln Lake, for sharing her camp and giving him something to look forward to every year.

Steve lived his life simply and honestly. His identity took shape through his profession as a Licensed Land Surveyor. Owning his own business for over 53 years in Baldwinsville, Steve and his crews extensively surveyed much of the towns of Van Buren and Lysander, Syracuse University and across many CNY counties. He planned thousands of sites for local housing developments, including Radisson.

The love of his profession did not only entail practice. Steve gave back to his profession in so many ways. He held every office for the CNY Land Surveyors professional organization, including President for many years. Steve was a Shaw Fund Board member for the NYS Association of Professional Land Surveyors, and worked diligently on conferences that provided professional development and continuing education classes for surveyors throughout the State. In January 2025, at their annual conference, NYSAPLS honored Steve with their Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedicated service to the profession for over five decades.

For years Steve was an adjunct professor of land Surveying at SUNY ESF Ranger School. He worked on NYSAPLS legislative committee updating NY’s statutes for licensing. Steve was a member of the Colvin Crew, an informal group of surveyors, historians and outdoor enthusiasts who retrace the steps and locate the historic survey markers of Verplank Colvin. Steve donated surveying services to Habitat for Humanity, supported local little league baseball and softball teams and was a pillar of support for the community of Baldwinsville.

Along with his love of the forest, mountains and Limekiln Lake, Steve was a proud Eagle Scout (Limestone District) who went through scouting with his dad, Bob. Steve carried on this legacy with Troop 209 of Liverpool and his stepson, Stephen. Scouting encompassed all that Steve loved, citizenship, character, self-reliance, honor, and love of nature. All of which he lovingly passed on to his children, nieces and nephew.

He was predeceased by his stepdaughter, Kathryn.

Steve is survived by his wife Kathy, brother-in-law and canoeing partner, Bill Henry, daughters, Cindy Sehnert and Debby Sehnert (Jerry Ball), stepson, Stephen Kiesa (Bridget), grandson, Owen, his lap companion, Paco, and grand canines, MeMe and Jack who he fondly called King.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday August 12, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm with funeral services to follow at 6:00 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541State Rt 31, Baldwinsville NY 13027.
