Thomas L.
Ryan
December 12, 1945 – August 3, 2020
Thomas ("Tom") Leo Ryan, 74, of Syracuse, New York passed away peacefully at home on Monday with family by his side. Born in Syracuse, Tom graduated from Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic School class of 1964. In 1965 he joined the Air Force, serving in Vietnam in 1967. After leaving the Air Force two years later, Tom began a career at the United States Postal Service.
In addition to being a letter carrier for over 40 years, Tom was an avid volunteer, often participating in his children's activities including being a coach and equipment manager for Liverpool Little League, a referee in Optimist Basketball and a Track and Field official. While it was his children who inspired his involvement in these positions, he would continue to work with the Syracuse Chargers and other organizations for the rest of his life. Always happy to help, he received numerous awards for his volunteerism including The Nate and Evelyn White Lifetime Service Award in March 2006 and the Arnie Briggs Good Guy Award in July 2009.
Despite walking for a living, he ran for recreation and completed four marathons, twice in the New York City Marathon. For years his goal was to log 1,000 miles per year, a feat he accomplished many times over. He also enjoyed reading mystery novels, walking around the neighborhood and celebrating the holidays surrounded by loved ones.
Cathie and Tom enjoyed vacationing in Alexandra Bay and Virginia Beach. Enjoying fabulous views and their favorite restaurants, they would often bring back souvenirs for friends and family. Tom was predeceased by his parents Leo and Mary (O'Hare) Ryan and his infant sister Mary Ryan.
He is survived by his partner of 28 years, Cathie Rotunno, his brother Andy, his children Erin, Sean and Shannon, as well as his grandson Canyon.
