Obituary

After a hard-fought battle with cancer, Warren Alan Machell, 80, of Liverpool, NY, passed away at his home Saturday, November 11, 2023, with his faithful wife and loving children by his side.  Warren was born in Syracuse, NY on February 21, 1943. He would remain committed to the area for his entire life, graduating from Syracuse University in 1964 with a degree in History. He maintained season tickets to his Alma Mater's basketball team for over 50 years. His family often joked that his marriage ran a close second to his love of Syracuse Basketball.

In his final days, Warren dictated that his life's philosophy be included in his obituary: "That's why we are here – to help others."

Warren's life was one of loyalty, generosity and service.  Over the years he donated 28 gallons of blood, was a member of his beloved Dewitt Community Church's choir for over 40 years, and worked with Literacy Volunteers for 30 years. Warren's career was also focused on helping others, having taught special education at Emerson J. Dillon Middle School in Phoenix, NY until his retirement in 2000.

Perhaps his most rewarding work was with Operation Southern/Northern Comfort. Originally founded to help rebuild homes in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Operation Southern Comfort turned to its own backyard to become Operation Northern Comfort, and began helping those in need in Central New York. He found great satisfaction in helping to organize Syracuse's annual Crawfish Festival, ONC's largest fundraiser.

In addition to his passion for helping others, Warren was also an avid traveler, having visited all 50 states, and countries in Europe, Africa, the Americas, New Zealand, and Australia.  Warren is predeceased in death by his parents, George and Viola (Torrey) Machell.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen (Kozelsky), daughter, Torrey (Jay) Popovich and son, Mark (Jessie) Machell, his beloved grandchildren; Brady, Finnegan, Jack, Callahan, Harper, Frances, and Jasper; 2 brothers; Charles and David, and several loving nieces and nephews.
