Obituary

William L. Hammer, 90, of Phoenix, NY passed away peacefully on Monday. Bill laid down the working tools of life and was called by the Great Architect to the house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. He was born and raised in Butler, PA the son of the late Manford "Larry" and Frances (VanSanford) Hammer.  After high school he entered the military serving in the US Army. Bill was employed as a Purchasing Agent, retiring in 1991 from the Nestle Company in Fulton, NY. He has been a resident of Phoenix, NY since 1977 and enjoyed spending the winters months in Fort Myers, FL. His memberships included; F&AM Masonic Lake City Lodge # 127 in Oswego for 57 years, serving as Past Master and Past District Deputy, Oswego Elks Lodge # 271 and the Pennellville United Methodist Church. Bill loved to be outside, whether taking rides in his 1971 Pontiac Catalina convertible or tending to the garden. Most of all, he cherished time with his family. He was a gentleman's gentleman with a beautiful voice and loved music. To know him was to love him. He is predeceased by his late wife, Doris, son, Brent Alan Hammer, Sr. and his sister, Sally Sperino.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 12 years, Beverly J. Freytag Hammer, his brother, James (Marlene Larson) Hammer, three daughters; Sherrie Lee Thompson, Sue Laren Hammer, Sondra Kay Nelson, step children, Pamela (Frank) Najdul and David (Lisa) Freytag, Jr.  He was known as Papa to his several grandchildren, especially acknowledging Chelsey Cole, great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 State Rt 31, Baldwinsville with funeral services to follow at 11:00 am. A Masonic service will be held at 10:45 am.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Pennellville United Methodist Church, P O Box 205, Pennellville, NY 13132.
