Bill Legg, 77, a science educator, died Sunday morning at Community General Hospital.
Born in Syracuse, NY, he pursued a life long career in science education and environmental conservation. A graduate of Central High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in May 1953 at Hamilton College and a Master of Science Education in August 1955 at Syracuse University.\r\nHe dedicated 53 years of his life to the service of young people and science education. He served the community since 1955 as a teacher, a subject supervisor, a mentor, an environmental leader and promoted science education and conservation through various Boards of Directors and volunteer organizations throughout the Central New York region.
Following 13 years of teaching tenth grade biology at Liverpool High School, he served\r\nLiverpool School District as Science Subject Supervisor for 23 years and retired in 1991. He started a second post-retirement career by co-founding Project Watershed, a consortium of educational, industrial and government organizations that connected Central New York\r\nschools with successful educational water resource programs and modules. As director of Project Watershed, 1994-2006, he promoted the participation of high school student groups and adult volunteer teams in comprehensive water quality monitoring at regional stream sites. Currently, Project Watershed involves 23 High School groups monitoring 19 streams in four counties. Through the Onondaga Soil and Water conservation district, he helped organize the Regional Envirothon and Environmental Field Days from 1992 until 2006 for local area schools.
To honor his service and commitment to the district, the Central New York\r\nEnvirothon Committee has agreed to name the overall regional award in his honor. Bill served as the Director of the Board for the Onondaga Soil and Water Conservation district from 1997 until 2007. He is survived by his beloved family: wife of 51 years, May Melvin Legg, son, Paul W. Legg, daughter-in-Iaw, Cheryl M. Legg, daughter, Marjorie Legg, daughter, Linda J. Legg, and two grandchildren, Carley and Christopher Legg. He is also survived by many loving family members including nephews, great-nephews, cousins and long time friends. Cremation and service will be private. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 2 at the Maurer Funeral Home in Liverpool at 300 Second Street from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
