Dr. William D. Nugent of Liverpool, NY, Thousand Island Park, NY and Cape Coral, FL died peacefully in his sleep on February 24, 2024. He was born on September 30, 1929 to Elsie Louise Cleland and Walter Backus Nugent in Heuvelton, NY.  He attended school there until age 16, when he left to begin the winding road to medicine.  Dr. Nugent graduated medical school (Upstate Medical Center) in 1957 to become a dedicated anesthesiologist for The Anesthesia Group PC at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, NY until 2005.  He retired at 76, a life saver and a hero to many.  During his tenure, he served as president of the American Heart Association (NY Chapter), and President of the NYSSA (New York State Society of Anesthesiologists) as well as the neighborhood expert medical opinion during his off-hours.

He loved to ski and was a longtime member of the National Ski Patrol. Dr. Nugent was also a lifetime member of the Grasse River Outdoors Club, where he spent quality time and formed many deep friendships.  He was an avid hunter, lover of water, ducks and dogs. And he was loved back by all the dogs.  Dr. Nugent was also a carved wood duck collector and wildlife enthusiast.  "Doc" loved his hours spent on the St. Lawrence River and on Wellesley Island watching the comings and goings of his beloved family. During his winters, he enjoyed watching the mullet jump in the sun out of the Ernesto Canal in Cape Coral, Florida. Dr. Nugent is predeceased by his parents, Walter Nugent, Elsie Nugent and his sister, Beverly M. Nugent.

Dr. Nugent is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of almost 52 years, Donna L. (Smith) Nugent.  His eight children; Kim L. Nugent (Tom Elliott), William Britt Nugent (Judy Polanco), Kelly T. (Bill Badger) Nugent, Kristin D. (Joe) Mancuso, Megan L. (Jamie) Gruppe, Keri L. (Frank) Heitman, Ryan P. (Melissa) Nugent, Patrick C. (Amanda) Nugent, 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

His family and friends will miss his humor, wit, kindness, intelligence and generosity, but most of all his story-telling, after announcing "I have the feather!"

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 pm at the Maurer Funeral Home Moyers Corners, 3541 State Rt 31, Baldwinsville, NY 13027.
