William John
Telesca
August 1, 1931 – November 21, 2023
Dr. William (Bill) John Telesca, a devoted husband, loving father, esteemed scholar, and accomplished athlete, peacefully passed away on the morning of November 21, 2023, in Cicero, NY, at the age of 92. He was surrounded by his cherished wife, Patricia, and their children.
Born on August 1, 1931, in Port Chester, NY, to Italian immigrants Joseph and Catherine Telesca, William's journey through life was characterized by resilience, dedication, and a passion for knowledge. His father, a World War I veteran, instilled in him a profound appreciation for the opportunities and freedoms offered by the United States.
After spending three years in the Catholic Seminary and serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, William pursued higher education on the GI Bill. He became the first in his family to attend college, earning an undergraduate degree in history from Fordham University in 1958, where he graduated third in his class. In the same year, he married his beloved wife, Patricia Melillo.
William's academic pursuits extended beyond the United States as he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1966. Accompanied by his wife and three children, he ventured to Rome, Italy, to study in the Vatican and write his dissertation titled "14th Century Crisis in the Church." His academic journey culminated in a Ph.D. in medieval history in 1969. Fluent in Latin, proficient in Italian, and well-versed in three other languages, his knowledge of history was revered.
Joining LeMoyne College in 1967 as an Assistant Professor of Medieval History, William's impact on his students and colleagues was immeasurable. A full professor by 1972, he was well-published, well-respected, and known for his prodigious passion for history. Even after retiring in 2003, he continued to share his knowledge with enthusiasm, teaching for many years with Elderhostel.
Beyond his academic achievements, William was an exceptional athlete. He played semi-professional baseball and football but was best renowned as "Billy Long" on the golf course. He started his golfing journey as a caddy at the Westchester Country Club at age 9, later becoming a scratch golfer. His prowess on the course, including winning the club championship in Cicero, NY, shooting a 69 at the age of 84, showcased his enduring mastery and love for the sport.
William is predeceased by his brother, Andrew Telesca.
William John Telesca is survived by his adoring wife, Patricia Telesca, and their four children: Joseph (Mary) Telesca, Nicholas (Carrie) Telesca, William (Suzanne) Telesca, and Susan Gucciardi; a sister, Camille Pirilli and sister-in- law, Marie Telesca. He leaves behind a legacy that extends through eight grandchildren: Paul Telesca, Laura (Kevin) Flaherty and Julia Telesca, Amanda and Andrew Telesca, and Joseph, Kate and Molly Gucciardi.
He had a capacious mind, a searing intellect and a lapidarian command of the English language. William was kind, gracious and grateful for all his many blessings. William will be remembered as a beloved figure, admired by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family and friends will carry forward the memories of his extraordinary life, cherishing the legacy of a man who touched the hearts and minds of those around him.
