Obituary

Ying-Chen "YC" Hwang, of Liverpool, NY passed away on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the age of 102 years and 11 months old, while at breakfast with Peter who had been caring for his father for the last few months. It was YC's strong desire to stay at home. Well into his hundred years he was cooking all his meals and was able to walk himself up the stairs to bed in his last days.  Dignified and persistent until the very end, he embodied grit as well as the value of moderation for slow and steady achievement.

Born in Shanghai, China on October, 1919 to Liang-Zai and Ying Cheng Hwang, YC graduated from Chiao Tung University, class of 1942 in Japanese occupied Shanghai.  With two classmates, he exfiltrated through the enemy lines to join Chiang Kai-shek in Free China.  Pushed westward by the invaders, the three engineers managed manufacturing factories for essential communications equipment including radios for the Kuomintang army.

Accordingly, he was awarded an internship at US National Bureau of Standards, which was deferred until victory in World War II.

During his internship in Washington, DC he met Lois while dancing. They married and started their family in 1948. YC continued his education at College Park, University of Maryland obtaining degrees in Electrical Engineering. While working in Philadelphia he was awarded his Ph.D. and received an offer for employment in Syracuse, NY on aerospace electronics.

YC was a research scientist with General Electric for almost 30 years. His semiconductor inventions relating to USAF radars were recognized in three patents by the US Patent Office.

Along with his co-workers, YC was enthusiastic about tennis and golf, and planned many seasons of regular get togethers. He frequently attended Elfun lunches and was a Life member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers.  Each morning he performed a sequence of 18 tai-chi style positions in slow motion.

After caring for his wife Lois during her prolonged illness for a decade, he was baptized at Christ the King Church in Bayberry. In recent years he participated in Bible studies with Evergreen Fellowship of Syracuse Chinese Christian Community. He felt welcomed and admired where bible readings, hymns, prayers, and sermons were shared in his native language. YC enjoyed the friendship of other Chinese refugees, emigrees, and persecuted Christians.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, Peter G.H. Hwang of Austin, TX, three granddaughters; Katie, Carly, and Natalie, 6 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Huang Ci Tong and Jian Xien.  We are grateful for his commitment to financial sponsorship, his nieces and nephews in the Zhou, Li and Lu families were able to attend US universities for graduate degrees.

A Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Maurer Funeral Home, Inc., 300 Second Street Liverpool, NY 13088. A future memorial gathering will be planned in California, when he will be entombed next to his wife, Lois.
