Obituary

George L. Melton died Saturday, August 5 at Upstate University Hospital.  He was 76.

George was born in Wilmington, DE on May 10, 1941 to Lester and Dorothy (nee Sheppard) Melton.  The family moved to Kennett Square, PA, where George attended and graduated from Kennett Square High School.

In 1959, at age 19, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon his initial discharge in May of 1961, he immediately re-enlisted for an additional six years, serving in Vietnam, where he was deployed to Ho Chi Minh City as a search and rescue engineer.

Following his service, George was hired by Greyhound Lines as a bus driver and often drove charter for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team fan club. He eventually settled in Syracuse where he attended Onondaga Community College and raised his family.

Surviving to cherish his memory is his son, George (Colleen) Melton, of PA, three daughters, Debbi (Jason) Wanamaker, of PA, Ramona Melton, of Syracuse, Amanda Melton, of Baldwinsville, four grandsons, two granddaughters and his brother, Richard (Irene) Melton, of FL.

A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 4069 Howlett Hill Road, Syracuse, NY on Monday, August 14 at 11:00AM in the Memorial Chapel.
